The Florida Afterschool Network

The mission of the Florida Afterschool Network is to provide unified leadership to advocate for the development, enhancement and sustainability of innovative, high quality afterschool programs and policies statewide.

The Florida Afterschool Network joined a national initiative dedicated to afterschool programs with funding in 2005 by the Mott Foundation.

Our stakeholders include a diverse group of organizations whose common thread is the desire for all children to receive high quality afterschool care. Our founding partners currently invest over $100 million in afterschool programs. Below is a summary of the organizations that our founding partners represent.

The Children's Services Councils of Florida (CSCF) collectively invest $266 million annually for children's services, including an estimated $112 million for afterschool programs in 15 counties. The mission of the CSCF is to provide the means for Children's Services Councils, Juvenile Welfare Boards and similar bodies to cooperatively address the needs of Florida's families and children, and the organizations participating in the Council.

Florida Department of Education (FDOE) administers the 21st Century Community Learning Center program for the state. It currently administers $44.5 million annually, funding 78 grants and supporting 312 afterschool centers. The Department estimates that between 30,000 and 35,000 children and youth participate in those centers. The University of Florida evaluates the program.

Florida After School Alliance (FASA) is the professional membership organization for afterschool programs and the practitioners who service school age children in these programs. FASA has provided advocacy, networking and professional development opportunities for its members across the state of Florida.

The Children's Forum has included an afterschool focus since 1999. It is working to increase safety, quality and availability of afterschool programs through advocacy, statewide training, seminars and symposiums; and promotion of the National AfterSchool Association Quality Standards.

Governance

The management of FAN is vested in the Governing Board which consists of members who represent significant statewide stakeholders. The Board meets monthly in person or on conference call to conduct business of network.
